A Total Body Cleanse Starts With the Colon

Juicing is a great way to help toilet paperwith a complete body cleanse. Fresh Juices supply us with an abundance of vitamins, minerals, phytochemicals, antioxidants and enzymes in a way that is easily and quickly absorbed. This provides tremendous support to our major detoxification organs – the liver, kidneys and colon. Before starting any kind of detox method we must ensure that the colon is functioning properly. Many of the toxins that are released during whole body cleansing are transported from the liver to the colon to be eliminated. If we are not having a bowel movement at least once a day we will reabsorb a lot of the toxins back into the bloodstream. Some health experts even believe that we should have one bowel movement for every meal we eat. If we eat three meals a day, we should poop three times a day.

Colon Health:
1) The most important thing we can do for the colon is to eat plenty of fiber daily. We should cut out refined grains and swap them for whole grains, eat at least 5 portions of fruit and vegetables a day, include nuts, seeds and legumes in our diet. This will help bulk up the feces and move it through. Taking psyllium husks is also highly recommended to help with elimination.

2) Drink at least 8 glasses of water each day, the colon will slow down if we get dehydrated.

3) Seriously cut back on sugar. I recommend only [ad#Probiotic]eating sugar which comes naturally in fruits and vegetables. White sugar, brown sugar, high fructose corn syrup, and other forms of added sugar feed undesirable intestinal bacteria, such as candida. This can play havoc with digesting and eliminating food, causing problems like IBS, constipation, diarrhea, allergies, infections and an under functioning immune system. Taking a high quality probiotic supplement is recommended, and can go a long way to improve intestinal flora and digestive health.

4) Clearing out old fecal matter is another important step in colon health. Unless we have been eating a pure diet all our lives or have already undertaken some strong colon cleansing methods, we will almost certainly have old feces hanging out in the colon. Yes, this is true, as unpleasant and unhealthy as it sounds! However, there are herbs we can take that help to shift this old fecal matter, improve peristalsis and help re-lubricate the colon wall. Look for herbal supplements that contain any or all of these herbs – Ginger Root, Fennel, Termianlia Cherbula, Cape Aloe, Senna, Barberry Rootbark, and Barberry Rootbark. A good quality Aloe Vera gel or juice is also beneficial for shifting old fecal matter.

5) Exercising is one of the best gifts you give to your colon health. Thirty minutes of cardiovascular exercise at least three time a week really helps keep the bowel moving. Yoga and Tai Chi are also great and help with digestion. To read more about nutrition for exercise visit muscle recovery

Juices for Colon Health:
Some fresh juices help to bulk up the feces and also help provide beneficial vitamins and oils that can help improve the quality of the mucous lining of the colon wall. Here are some juicer recipes tailored for the colon.

Total Body Cleanse Juice #1 – Carrot Juice
carrote juice5 large carrots

Carrots are beneficial for helping regenerate the mucous membranes of the colon wall. This is due to their generous supply of vitamin A, which is needed for the health of all mucous membranes in the body. Carrot juice is also great for bulking up the feces.

Total Body Cleanse Juice #2 – Apple and Pear
2 apples
2 pears

No need to peel the apples and pears, this will add some fiber to the juice. Apple and pear juices are great for helping the bowels move, so this is also a great constipation remedy.

Total Body Cleanse Juice #3 – Lemon Juice
2 lemons
water to dilute

Only juice the flesh of the lemons. Add water to your taste. This is a great juice to take on an empty stomach before breakfast. It has a great flushing effect, and is actually very beneficial for the kidneys and liver. If you warm it up a little it can help move the bowels even more, but don’t overdo the heat. The hotter the juice, the more the nutrients are destroyed.

Total Body Cleanse Juice #4 – ACL Colon cleanse
4 carrots
1 apple
1 lemon

This juice is great for your colon and will really help jump start a colon cleanse.

WOW! New to juicing. Just made #4. Had a bag of Meyer lemons and used one. This was FANTASTIC!
I’d never been able to make myself try carrot juice. Sounded awful. Tried some before I added the apple and lemon and was blown away. Had to run to the store and buy carrots in bulk because of this. Thank You!!!

  4. kathy says:

They say the juice should be consumed seconds after coming out of the juicer as it lose nutrients quickly. Is this true. If so, how can one take juice away from home?

  5. veronica says:

    Hi Kathy,

Drinking the juice freshly made is always best. The skins of fruits and vegetables is what protects the nutrients inside from oxidative damage. So when we juice fruits and veggies they are wide open to the effects of oxidation. So the longer we wait to drink the juice the more antioxidants and other nutrients that will be lost. However, if we need to store a juice to drink later, then there is an effective way we can do that. Choose a bottle size that leaves as little air in it as possible when the juice is in there. Ideally you would want to fill the bottle to the very top, that will protect the juice a lot from oxidation damage. Another option is to use a tool called pump’n’seal that sucks out the excess air out of a drink container. Pump’n’seal was orginally used for resealing wines but works great for fresh juice too as the same principles apply. By limiting the amount of oxygen in the container, we limit the amount of oxidation. About 24 hours is the maximum we want to store a juice by this method.

    Hope that helps 🙂
If you have any other questions, please feel free to ask.

    Happy Juicing

Also, if you buy a low speed juicer, your juice will not degrade as fast as it will if you use a high speed centrifugal juicer. Try a masticating juicer. With low speed juicers the juice can be stored much longer (still not more than a couple of days) before it loses its nutritional value.

I am new to juicing. I got a juicer from “Santa”! What can I do with the pulp that isn’t wasteful?

  8. veronica says:

    Hi April,

You have definitely been good this year if Santa got you a juicer 🙂

There are a few things you can do with the pulp, and you will find some great books on amazon that are full of juicer pulp recipes. SOme of the things that we do is to use fruit pulp to make popsicles, carrot pulp is great for making bread and vegetable pulp generally can be used in soups.

  9. kathy says:

    Organic vs regular fruits/vegs.
Difficult to get organic products everywhere always. Does the regular stuff work as well as the organic products. In other words should we MAKE SURE we buy (search for) organic products or will we get the same health benefits using the ordinary products?

  10. veronica says:

    Hi Kathy,

While it is best to get organic produce to cut down on pesticides, we can still benefit greatly from juicing when it is not always convenient to use organic. However, it is important to always peel non-organic produce because this is where the majority of pestisides reside. If the produce we are using is not peelable, such as broccoli, we can buy a vegetable wash that is available at most health food stores that that is designed to remove as many pesticides as possible.

In short, it is a million times better to juice non-organic produce than to not juice!

    Hi,
just bought a juicer. I found your website while googling for juice recipes.

I was thinking only of tast while looking for the juice, I finally found lots of healthy reasons.

    Thanks a lot.

  12. veronica says:

Yes! Juicing is first and foremost exceptionally good for us.

  13. Alex says:

I think this is great website! However, my question is am I allow to eat food with this recipe? I drink these in the morning with empty stomach and I eat after couple of hours!so please let me know and it would help me a lot!

  14. veronica says:

    Hi Alex,

drinking your juice on an empty stomach is definitely the best time! This way there is no other food that your juice has to compete with for digestion, this improves the bioavailability of the nutrients in the juice. It takes about 20 minutes to digest juice on an empty stomach, so just to be on the safe side we ususally wait about 30 minutes before eating breakfast.

    Best

I just got a Jack Lalanne juicer as a gift and I came across your recipies. You’re recipies look great and I can’t wait to try them.

  16. Shannon says:

I just bought a juicer and I’m excited to start using it. However, I take many medications (8) {one of which must be taken first thing in the a.m. on an empty stomach} My concern is how the total body cleanses will affect the effectiveness of my medications since that would clearly alter my drug levels in my body. Thanks in advance.

  17. veronica says:

    Hi Shannon,

That is a good question, that I am definitely not qualified to answer or give advice for. Check in with your doctor about that one. Great to hear you just got a juicer machine 🙂

    Best wishes

  20. Hannah says:

    Hello!
My mom says that juicing is a waste of time so can you make me a short list of things to get her to buy a juicer? And can you recommend one that won’t break the bank that also won’t break easily?
    Thanks for your time!
    Hannah

  21. veronica says:

    Hi Hannah,

Great to hear you want to get a juicer – hope you can bring your mother around to the idea. Tell her that one of the key benefits of juicing is the sheer number of antioxidants that they contain. For example research show that a juiced carrot provides many times more of the antioxidant called beta-carotene than actually eating it. This is because the antioxidants in fruits and vegetables are bound to their fibers and need to be released so that we can digest them. A juicing machine is far more effective at breaking free antioxidants from fiber than our teeth are. If we combine this fact with the reality that we consume at least several portion of fruits and vegetables in one juice, we can easily see just how antioxidant dense fresh juice becomes. Antioxidant boost our immune system and protect our cells from oxidative damage that can lead to a number of diseases such as cancer and heart disease. This “cell protection” is also one of the keys for keeping us looking younger for longer.

As far a budget juicing machine, in my opinion the L’Equip Mini is a great choice.

  22. Hannah says:

    Hi again!
    P. S.
I should also mention that we’re both going on a diet.
    Thanks!

  23. Michele says:

Hello. I have Lyme disease and need desperately to cleanse my body before starting treatment. My biggest problem with jutting is that I am very highly allergic to carrots! This seems to be the most used ingredient. If I use everything else, except the carrots, am I getting enough or not. I have 73 food allergies/sensativities! 🙁 please help. Thank you.

  24. veronica says:

    Hi Michele,

I wouldn’t worry about not being able to use carrots, carrots are popular for juicing because they are cheap and they are also sweet for a vegetable, so they taste better juiced than most vegetables. However, that doesn’t mean they are the most nutritious or cleansing of vegetables (even though they are still great all the same). Green vegetables, especially green leafy vegetables (kale, spinach, collard greens bok choy), are the most nutrient and antioxidant rich of vegetables and are the best option for detoxification, cleansing and boosting the immune system. The darker green the vegetable the better. In addition to this, beets are also excellent for detoxification.

  28. Ben Malcolm says:

A minor comment/clarification..in the text above it mentions sugar feeding undesirable intestinal bacteria such as Candida. Candida is actually a genus of fungus (there are many species e.g. Candida albicans) and not a bacteria. It’s true that disruption of normal flora (bacteria) can set the stage for Candida infection although this pertains mainly to the vagina and is commonly termed a yeast infection.

Candida is able to colonize other parts of the body such as the mouth or esophagus although does so almost exclusively in immunocompromised states such as HIV/AIDS, neutropenia (secondary to chemotherapy), or prolonged corticosteroid use (e.g. when using steroid asthma medications it’s recommended to rinse the mouth after to prevent oropharyngeal candidiasis). Rarely, it can invade systemically which is life threatening.

Anyway, just an FYI to keep your microorganisms straight 🙂
