Can You Juice Carrot Tops?

Can you juice carrot tops? This is a good question that often comes up for many people when they start juicing. There is not a black and white answer but I will give you the facts. Carrot tops (also called carrot greens or carrot leaves) are edible but they contain substances that are mildly toxic to us which is the reason that a lot of people don’t eat them or juice them. However there are people who add the leaves to salads or juice them and suffer no adverse effects.

So why would people eat carrot tops if they are mildly toxic? Another good question and the answer is that carrot tops are extremely nutritious. Some sources say that the carrot tops are even more nutritious than the actual carrot. So one thing is for sure if you, if you do juice them it will greatly enhance the health benefits of your carrot juice recipes. However, I will leave the choice to you.

Very well said. I bookmarked your site for future visits.

I just juiced the tops with my recipe… my throat feels like it is swollen and i feel a little dizzy with bitter taste in mouth and throat. The carrot tops were less than 3% of my total juice of carrots, apples, kale, oranges, cucumber, lime and celery. I just ruined 20 dollars of juice and I feel like crap. Don’t listen to those quack sites that are saying it is okay to eat carrot tops. Trust me, my juice don’t usually make me feel like I just OD’d on some bad drug.

My friend gets the same way with cilantro — you’re probably allergic.

I juiced straight (organic)carrot tops in my VitaMix with water and drank about 6 ounces of it on an empty stomach. Not the best tasting stuff, I admit, but I feel fine and several hours have passed. It diminished my apetite somewhat and I skipped lunch, but ate my regular amount for dinner. Again, no side effects except that I felt full after the 6 ounces. Non-organic carrots have a lot of pesticides; maybe that was an issue for the person who felt unwell after.
