Health Benefits of Juicing

HappyFruitFaceJuicing is an easy way to provide yourself with a high level of quality nutrition. Here I will talk about the properties of juicing that makes it so potent, and the health benefits that it can provide. It is a practice taken up by many people who are health conscious, who claim how great it is. So what is it about juicing we all rave about?

Well, there are 3 main reasons why juicing is so beneficial:

  1. The juice requires hardly any digestion, so all its nutritional goodness gets rapidly into your system.
  2. When you juice, you use more fruits and vegetables than you could actually eat. As a result, you are drinking a densely packed amount of vitamins, minerals and other plant-based nutrients.

  3. Liver detoxification

Below are some of the many health benefits of juicing :

  • Improving the cardiovascular system and heart health:

    • Both antioxidant vitamins C and E  prevent the damaging effect of free radicals on artery walls. They prevent blood from sticking, clotting, becoming toxic as well as helping to lower triglycerides levels (Here is more info about how to lower triglycerides). Good to great levels of vitamin C can be found in most vegetables and fruits. For the health benefits of juicing vitamin E you can use blackberries, kiwi, asparagus and spinach in your juicer recipes.
    • Potassium and magnesium are essential for proper heart function and a regular heart beat. Blackberries are a good source for both these minerals.
    • Additionally, as we know, being overweight plays a fundamental role in developing heart disease, so its good to take some common sense and a realistic approach on how to lose weight and maintain a healthy weight.

Detoxifying the liver – this is fundamental for good health:

      • The liver has 100′s of important functions. One of its main functions is to clean the blood and remove toxins and metabolic waste.  With the amount of toxins we are dealing with everyday in modern life we need to be real diligent in helping to keep it “clean” so it can keep us clean!
Certain nutrients are needed to provide the juicing benefits of liver cleansing. Antioxidants beta-carotene, vitamin C, vitamin E, and N-acetyl cysteine are potent liver cleansers. In addition, B-vitamins riboflavin and niacin also aid liver cleansing.  Cabbage, brussel sprouts and cauliflower have been found to be great for the liver.
      • You can also add milk thistle supplements to your diet to help the liver detoxify.
    • Alkalizing your system (vegetable juicer recipes only):

      • All vegetables are alkalizing. Fruits on the other hand are not; they are mostly acidic in nature.
      • The benefits of making your body PH level less acidic is a subject of its own, so here are just a few juicing benefits;

        • Improved brain function
        • Improved heart function
        • Slowing down the aging process
        • Improved joint function – helping with arthritis
        • Less disease-prone body environment. Acidic environments breed diseases.
        • Better digestion

    • Helping with healthy skin, hair, nails and eyes:

      • The antioxidants vitamins C and E help to prevent skin damage from sun exposure, due to their free radical neutralizing abilities. The health benefits of juicing blackberries and blueberries together will provide you with a good source of vitamins C and E.
      • A deficiency in riboflavin (vitamin B2) can cause cracked lips, hair loss, dermatitis, greasy looking skin and other skin problems. Putting kale, spinach, and asparagus in your juicer recipes will provide you with vitamin B2.
      • The most potent nutrient for healthy eyes is vitamin A, which is not found in plants. Its precursor, beta-carotene, is found in abundance in orange colored fruits and vegetables. Beta-carotene is turned into vitamin A by the body.  This vitamin is essential for the retina to function properly and prevent night blindness. Both vitamins A and C reduce the risk of age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and cataracts. Carrot juice is a very good source for both of these vitamins.
    • Increased energy levels:

      • This one is pretty simple. Lots of juicing means lots more vitamins and minerals which are responsible for all sorts of necessary chemical reactions promoting health and vitality and therefore lots more energy. Enjoy juicer recipes every day!!
    • Rebuild blood cells:

      • Yes that’s right!
This is made possible by the incredibly healthy chlorophyll, which would need an article of its own to give justice to its health benefits!
On a molecular level chlorophyll looks almost exactly like a component of the red blood cell hemin. More amazingly scientists have found that when you assimilate chlorophyll into the body, it makes the chemical shift and actually becomes hemin. Essentially, taking chlorophyll is almost like getting a blood transfusion!
Chlorophyll is also a pigment that gives plants their green color. So put the green stuff in your juicer recipes! The darker the green, the more chlorophyll it contains.

    • Improved immune system:

      • Drinking juicer recipes regularly is going to give you a wide variety and more than adequate amount of antioxidants which are essential for a healthy immune system. The antioxidants from fruits and vegetables include vitamins A, C, E, plus a wide range of plant chemicals called phytochemicals. Phytochemicals have amazing and varied health benefits, most notably anti-cancer properties.

    To your health

What a great site! I remember seeing Jack LaLanne and his wife promoting the benefits of juicing and they sold their own brand of juicer. (I have a lot of admiration for him). I’ve been a vegetarian for many years and I’ve often considered getting a juicer.

  2. Laura Lewis says:

Yeah great site. I was inspired by the juice master :D Now I juice every now and then. Very healthy and gives alot of benefits aswell.

    Great to hear!

It is practically impossible not to feel healthier when you start drinking fresh juices on a regular basis!

I JUST BOUGHT MYSELF A JUICER FOR CHRISTMAS AND STARTED JUICING. VERY INTERESTING. I’M DOING IT FOR MY HEALTH MOSTLY. I’M REALLY ENJOYING IT. I’VE BOUGHT TWO MORE FOR MY DAUGHTERS AND THEIR FAMILIES. HOPEFULLY TO GET THEM ON A MORE HEALTHIER DIET, ESPECIALLY MY GRAND KIDS. THANKS AGAIN.

    HEALTHY DRINK

THIS MAY TASTE NASTY BUT IT IS VERY HEALTHY YOU USE 2 STRANDS OF CELERY AND AND 1 BIG PEICE OF BROCCOLI AND A WHOLE BOX OF TOMATOES WITH 1 LARGE CARROT.

  7. Karen says:

My family has just purchased a Jack LaLane juicer to us at home and we are already using it. My husband was mixing juice for him and our two young daughters Of course you would not keep the girls sitting on the side lines they would have to help out. The juice colors are off; it looks likes things you may never wanted to even taste it alone let alone to drink a glass; but they are really good; the ones i have tried. We are loving it and hope we will hope for better health, and energy.

WE ARE LOVING IT AND AND HOP IT WILL GI

Excellent, and much needed information. Just watched juicing documentary and are preparing to start juice fast. Needed the recipes and specifics of what fruits and vegetables to use for maximum benefits.

  9. mt says:

i have had a juicer for at least 4 years now, and it is the best thing since sliced bread. i cannot live without it. skin looks better, mouth feels cleaner, esp when juicing parsley. cabbage juice detoxes liver. and you have more energy, flushes candida (yeast) out of body, so the cravings for sugar disappear. these are just a few of my experiences. and for women who have frequent yeast infections, i believe it will clear that up. 2 doctors have told me that its better to just eat the food, that juicing isnt good for you, esp fruit. Thank God for a brain, and that i know everything a dr says is not golden because they have md behind their name. i do not like vegetables, and for anyone else who doesnt, putting apples, esp green apples, but any other fruit like pineapples, oranges, grapes, will cover up the taste of the vegetables.

  10. John says:

We have begun juicing several weeks ago and now LOOK FORWARD to our juice meals. Went and picked a bushel of apples yesterday that look and taste wonderful.

  11. mike m. says:

Juicing is probably the single best thing you can do in your life. There is absolutely no better way to get vitamins and minerals into your body.Your energy level will increase like you would not believe. Most peoples Digestive system has been compromised due to all the poison we consume on a daily basis,so you cannot get all the nutrients you need just by eating fruits and vegetables or any other food for that matter.I can assure you if people juiced on a regular basis and eat more organic food people would rarely if ever suffer from illness and disease.

  12. Traveller says:

    Hello,
My husband travels a lot. How can we incorporate juicing for people who travel for work?
Will the juice still be healthy if i juice on Monday for the whole week and send it with him in bottles? Does the juice stay fresh? I’m worried it might spoil. Please advice.
    Thanks,

  13. veronica says:

    Hi Traveller,

A week is way to long to store any kind of fresh juice. How long a juice will last will depend upon the juicer your using. A centrifugal juicer like the Jack LaLanne juicer or the Breville Juice Fountain creates juice that needs to be consumed with 24 hours, and that;s providing that you store the juice in an air tight container in the refrigerator. The fuller the container is with juice the better too, because the excess air will created oxidation.

However, triturating machines like the Green Power Juicer create almost no oxidation because they juice very slowly and create no heat. This gives the juice a shelf life of 36 hours provided its stored air tight in the refridgerator.

For more detailed info about juicer machines check out our post about them HERE

    Regards
    Darren

  14. Jolanda says:

It never lasts long enough to go bad. But if it tastes ok, it’s ok. Some people, and I’m afraid Americans are becoming ridiculous about this, think anything not consumed in four minutes will kill them. Having grown up in a time when there were no expiry dates on anything and refrigerators were not a perfected piece of machinery, I can attest that there is relatively little out there that will harm you. Your body knows most of them already, and will not let them dwell in your stomach for long. So, if the juice is palatable, drink it.

  15. Traveller says:

Guys thanks a lot for the responses. Fortunately my husband has moved back, so no storing required anymore! Yay! We’re both enjoying our fruit-veggie juices everyday!

  16. Stephan says:

I didn’t know that juicing was so benefitial for so many aspect of your body’s health. Like slowing down the process of aging?!?! Wow. I want to live longer!

Hmm… all this reading about juice is making me thursty. Gotta start making myself some good home made juice!

  17. Jonathan says:

I’m currently doing a juice fast and I found this website very motivational and helpful, so thank you! :)

  18. Norka says:

Yummmm just made myself a juice of spinach and pineapple YUMMY :)

  19. Stephanie says:

I’ve been fruit- and vegetable juicing for two weeks, using a variety of fruits and vegetables. Other than morning and evening teas and daily V-8, cranberry juice, and water, the fruit and vegetable juices are my total meal plan. I would like to make this my permanent diet, as my digestive system feels so much better. I’ve looked around for guidance on whether this is a wise decision. Do you have any thoughts on this, or can you you direct me to a good research-based discussion on this question? THANKS so much!

  20. mt says:

    @STEPHANIE,
JUST CURIOUS AS TO WHY THE V-8 JUICE, THATS THE PURPOSE OF REAL JUICING. NOTHING THAT CAN SIT ON A SHELF FOR YEARS HAS ANY NUTRITIONAL VALUE, ESP ALUMINIMUM. THE JUICING HELPS DETOXIFY OUR BODIES, BUT WHEN YOU DRINK THAT STORE BOUGHT STUFF CONSTANTLY YOUR DEFEATING THE PURPOSE, BECAUSE YOUR PUTTING THE ALUM, PRESERVATIVES, AND CHEMICALS RIGHT BACK IN, EVEN THE PLASTIC BOTTLE V8 HAS NO VITAMINS IN IT. I WOULD LOVE TO USE MY JUICER EVERYDAY, AND TRY WHEN I CAN, BUT I CANNOT NOT EAT SOLID FOODS FOREVER, I MAY GO A FEW DAYS, AND JUST DRINK JUICE, BUT I DONT THINK WE CAN LIVE WITH OUT SOLID FOOD, BUT IF ITS WORKING FOR YOU, THEN YOU HAVE TO CONTINUE TO DO WHATS BEST.

  21. Stephanie says:

Thanks for your thoughts, MT! The V-8 is just a habit I’ve had for many, many years; and I’m sure I’ll discontinue it once I get comfortable with juicing. I began juicing because I wanted to juice fast related to a diverticulosis problem. Because I began to feel so much better holisitically, I’ve continued juicing. Thus my wondering about a totally juicing diet. As you’ve implied, the best diet is probably a combination of juicing and healthy solids (eaten in moderation)that complement juicing. Cheers!

  22. ContainerLiving says:

We generally juice ourselves due to our location (Philippines) but also very keen on going down the smoothie route which helps keep my weight down.

  23. mt says:

@ STEPHANIE AND JUST WHO READS THIS IS GENERAL. I POSTED COMMENT A WHILE AGO SAYING THAT I MIX ANYTHING TOGETHER, VEGETABLES AND FRUIT. WELL THIS IS JUST A LITTLE FYI. I CAME ACROSS A LADY THE OTHER DAY WHO IS INTO SAME THING RE: HEALTH, AND SHE TOLD ME MIXING FRUIT AND VEGETABLES IS NOT A GOOD IDEA. I HEARD THIS BEFORE NEVER WAS GIVEN REASON WHY. SHE SAID WHEN YOU MIX THE TWO, THIS IS OF COURSE FOR PEOPLE WHO DO IT CONSTANTLY DAILY LIKE I DO WHEN I HAVE A CHANCE, NOT ONCE IN A WHILE, ANYWAY, SHE SAID WHEN YOU MIX THE TWO IT FERMENTS IN STOMACH, LIKE ALCOHOL, SO ITS BETTER TO JUICE ONLY FRUITS ALL TOGETHER OR ONLY VEGETABLES TOGETHER BUT NOT TO MIX. SHE SAID PEOPLE WHO HAVE DONE FOR YEARS HAVE FOUND OUT THEY HAD LIVER PROBLEMS LIKE CIRROSIS AND WHEN THEY SAID THEY NEVER DRANK, THEY LINKED TO MIXING THE JUICE TOGTHER. SHE ALSO TOLD ME SOMETHING ELSE WASNT AWARE OF, THAT ANYTHING WITH SEED IS FRUIT, SO TECHNICALLY A CUCUMBER IS A FRUIT, NOT VEGETABLE, I NEVER THOUGHT OF THIS, I ONLY LEARNED IN SCHOOL THAT A TOMATO IS A FRUIT, NEVER ANYTHING WITH SEEDS. SHE ALSO TOLD ME THAT ANY FRUIT WITHOUT SEEDS IS ORGANIC OR NOT IS BECAUSE IT WAS GENETICALLY MODIFIED, WHICH I NEVER PAID ATTENTION TO, BUT I LOOKED THIS STUFF UP AND ITS ADDING UP NOW, WE HAVE TO BE CAREFUL WHAT WE BUY BECAUSE THEY ARE TRICKY. I HAD AN ORGANIC CUCUMBER WITH NO SEEDS (ENGLISH CUCUMBER) I SHOULD HAVE KNOWN BY SHAPE SOMETHING WAS NOT RIGHT. ANYWAY, I WILL MIX FRUIT AND VEGETABLES ONCE IN A WHILE NOW, BUT NOT LIKE I USED TO, DNT KNOW HOW I WILL DRINK STRAIGHT VEGETABLE JUICE, BUT ANYWAY, THAT WAS JUST SOME INFO I WANTED TO PASS ON THAT I JUST BECAME AWARE OF RECENTLY.

  24. Charlie says:

I was diagnosed with cancer of the esophagus in March of 2010. My doctors told me that I would have to have a major operation, but I didn’t need it. I beat it with getting into a juicing regimen. I did the chemo and radiation, but juicing as well. I don’t know why these doctors don’t recognize the benefits of nutritional therapy more. I am now cancer free and my oncologist calls me his “miracle patient.”

  25. Ari Vinograd says:

Wow, what a gem of an article from Darren and Veronica! Of particular note to me is the liver detox info – I have had great success juicing celery in particular, and in combination with a milk thistle product (I use one called LiverX), find my mood greatly improved (the liver has a great impact on our emotional state).

  26. Roxana says:

I am a fan, I recently started Juicing. although it is time consuming, and a ritual in itself.. I love it!!
I feel great!! cheers to all you juicers!!

  27. Pure Vitamins says:

Thanks for this great summary of the benefits of juicing, Veronica and Darren. It’s certainly a valuable way to top up your nutrient levels and help your body to detox, however, it’s best not to go on a strict juice fast without the supervision of your healthcare professional – especially if you have health problems.
