How Much Vitamin C is in Orange Juice?

How much vitamin C is in orange juice?

Oranges are practically synonymous with vitamin C. If we think vitamin C then we will most likely think about oranges or orange juice! Of course it is true that oranges are a good source of vitamin C, even though some other fruits are better, however the amount of vitamin C in a glass of orange juice can vary depending on how it is created.

The undoubtedly best way to drink orange juice in terms of vitamin C content is freshly made, straight from the juice extractor. Fresh orange juice contains the most vitamin C, but it is time dependent. Vitamin C is very sensitive to oxidation damage so as soon as the juice is made and exposed to the air the vitamin C content starts to degrade. Most commercial orange juice products are good source of vitamin C too, even if processing methods do kill of some of the vitamin C, but we will talk more about that later.

Below is a chart that gives the official figures for just how much vitamin C is in the main commercial brand orange juice products and of course freshly made. As you will see there is some major differences between the brands, with Florida’s Natural No Pulp and Minute Maid’s 100% Orange Juice winning the top slot and fresh made juice standing a full head and shoulders above the rest.

The recommended daily allowance of vitamin C is 60mg. This is a figure that is criticized more than probably any other micro-nutrient. Many nutritionist and health professionals dispute this and believe the figure should be much higher and often in the several thousand milligrams a day range. The general consensus is that 60mg a day is enough to ward off disease but not enough for optimum health.

The RDA for men is 90 mg, the RDA for women is 75 mg. They have changed it recently. And I think that it is important to note that we need more Vitamin C than just what can prevent scurvy. Getting even more can prevent some chronic illnesses. That is one of the reasons that the RDA was raised.
