Health Benefits of Apples.
DSC04659With all the hype these days about the health benefits of fruits like blueberries, goji berries, noni berries, etc – it is easy to forget about apples! They are still extremely good for you!

Apples are a great source of antioxidant vitamins A and C and also a good source of vitamin K. They contain a variety of minerals including calcium, potassium, magnesium and zinc. Furthermore, apples are a great source of antioxidant phytochemicals which fight free radicals. Phytochemicals have anti-cancer properties, help improve heart health, protect us from pollution and help to detoxify impurities from our cells. Phytochemicals in apples include quercetins, catechins, phloridzin and chlorogenic acid.

Juicing Apples
It is always best to get organic apples, if you can, to avoid the intake of pesticides and other chemicals and to achieve the best health benefits of juicing apples. If not, then it is a good idea to peel them, loosing some valuable nutrition. Many phytochemicals are found in the apple skins and much nutrition is also found just below the skin.

For the following recipes – always wash the apples well and remove stem. Personally we prefer to not core the apples to obtain more nutrition, but it’s not to everyone’s taste. Either way it’s fine. Some of these recipes will contain other fruits. So let’s enjoy the juicing benefits of apples!

1 lemon
1″ slice of ginger

Use only the flesh of the lemon, the rind will taste bitter. This one is great for colds and supplies vitamin C. You can also heat this one up and add a little honey on those winter nights, mmmmm. In the summer, chill before drinking, or use ice cubes sparingly. So refreshing!

Juicing Apple Recipes #5 – Green Supreme
1 apple
1 cup of spinach
1 cup of kale
1 cup of parsley

Juicing Recipes for Eye Health Vitamins

Eating carrots help you see in the dark my grandparents would tell me. Although they had no idea of the science behind this, it has been known for a long time that carrots really are good for your peepers and do indeed help prevent night blindness.

Vitamin A
tray of vegetablesVitamin A is the nutrient most associated with eye health (and carrots) and is actually one of the most important nutrients for eyes. Why so? Vitamin A is a water soluble antioxidant. It can work within the eyes to prevent cell damage from free radicals and reduce the risk of developing eye diseases such as age related macular degeneration (AMD). Vitamin A can help prevent cataracts from developing and vitamin A deficiency will lead to night blindness. If the deficiency continues, night blindness will progress into xerophthalmia causing dry eyes and corneal ulcers and eventually complete blindness.

Juicing for Vitamin A Food Sources: carrots, spinach, kale, broccoli, tomatoes, kiwi, blackberries, oranges and watermelon.

Vitamins C & E
blackberryVitamin C and E don’t have as high a profile as vitamin A for eye health, but they also play an important role in the well being of our eyes. Both vitamin C and E have been associated in studies with delaying age related macular degeneration. Vitamin C can reduce the risk of developing cataracts and may also prevent glaucoma.

Vitamin C Food Sources: oranges, blackberries, watermelon, kiwi, grapes, carrots, broccoli, cucumber, kale and spinach.

Vitamin E Food Sources: blackberries, apples and Kiwi.
