Juicing Recipes for Vitamin B1 – Juicing for Thiamine

Generally speaking most fruits and vegetables are not a significant source of vitamin B1 (otherwise known as thiamine). All meats, nuts and whole grains are the best sources of vitamin B1 with a big emphasis on whole grains. Refined grains contain much less vitamin B1. Beri Beri is a disease that results from a deficiency of vitamin B1 and once affected British colonists in Asia who started to polish their rice. Beri Beri affects the central nervous system leading to severe fatigue and problems with the cardiovascular system and the muscular systems because vitamin B1 is needed by neurons (fundamental cells of the nervous system) to function properly. Vitamin B1 is also essential for releasing energy from the food we eat.

Even though vitamin B1 is not found in abundance in fruits and vegetables, many of them still contain some vitamin B1. So if we pick the right juicing recipes for vitamin B1 (juicing for thiamine) we can still provide ourselves with this essential nutrient. The present recommended daily dose of vitamin B1 is 1.2mg for men and 1.1mg for women. Lactating women need 1.5mg per day. The following chart gives the vitamin B1 nutritional value of the best fruits and vegetables that we can juice for this nutrient.

Thiamine Juicer Recipes –

Vitamin B1 Juicer Recipe #1 – Grape Juice
3 cups of grapes (any color)

Directions: Grapes can be juiced whole because the seeds are too small to be a problem for your juice extractor. So the only prepping grapes need is a good rinse and that’s it.

Vitamin B1 Juicer Recipe #2 – Breakfast Blend
1 large grapefruit
2 medium oranges

Directions: Peel grapefruits and oranges and your good to go. Avoid juicing the peels because the contain oils that are toxic to us. However, the white pithy parts of grapefruits and oranges are loaded with antioxidants called bio-flavonoids so try and get as much of the pith into your juicer machine.

Vitamin B1 Juicer Recipe #3 – Asparagus Juice
1 cup of asparagus
2 apples (to sweeten)

Directions: If the apples are organic they can be juiced whole to take advantage of the dense concentration of antioxidants in the peel, otherwise it is better to peel them to cut down on the amount of pesticides that make it into the juice. The asparagus will just need a good rinse before juicing.

Juicing Recipes for Vitamin A – Juicing for Beta-Carotene

Technically speaking, vitamin A is a nutrient that is only found in dairy products and eggs. There are no actual fruit or vegetables that contain vitamin A. So when we talk about juicing recipes for vitamin A in reality we are talking about juicing for beta-carotene. Beta-carotene is an antioxidant of the carotenoid family that appears in many fruits and vegetables and our livers can convert it into vitamin A as needed.

One good way to tell if a fruit or vegetable contains beta-carotene is by its color. Beta-carotene acts as a plant pigment that puts the orange hue into fruits and vegetables. So carrots, summer squash, sweet potatoes, mangoes and Cantaloupe melons are all great sources of beta-carotene. The deeper the orange coloring of a fruit or vegetable the more beta-carotene it will contain. For that reason, carrots are the best known food source of beta-carotene and especially carrot juice. A juicing machine will break open the tough fibers of carrots and release more of the beta-carotene from the fibers for us to digest. So carrot juice is a better source of beta-carotene than actually eating carrots. Another little tip is that more beta-carotene is digested when it is accompanied by fat or oil. Adding a little olive oil to your carrot juicing recipes will therefore improve the bio-availability of beta-carotene.

There are green colored vegetables that are a great source of beta-carotene too. Kale, spinach and broccoli are prime examples. It is just that the chlorophyll (a plant pigment that produces the color green) content of kale, spinach and broccoli out ways the beta-carotene content.

Juicing Recipes for Vitamin D

It has been long believed that vitamin D is not present in fruits and vegetables and that there is no plant source that contains vitamin D (mushrooms are the only exception and then they contain very little vitamin D). So those who know a little bit about vitamins my be asking how you can make juicing recipes that deliver vitamin D?

Maybe you are thinking that I add milk or yogurt to some tasty fruit juice recipes or even mix up some cod liver oil with some green juice recipes and get vitamin D that way, but you would be wrong. You can actually achieve vitamin D from any fruit or vegetable juicing recipe without adding absolutely anything else. You might say that is impossible, but you would be wrong. So then what the heck am I talking about even if I agree that there is no fruits or vegetables that contains vitamin D. The answer is a simple one……

…….Drink your juicing recipes in the sun!!!

Ok, so that was a bit of a trick but vitamin D is created in the body by skin exposure to sunlight. Getting 10-15 minutes of sunlight 3 times a week provides enough vitamin D for our needs.

Juicing Recipes for Vitamin C

Vitamin C

Vitamin C is one of the most well known of nutrients. Just about everyone knows that oranges are a great source of vitamin C and that vitamin C is good for the immune system and for fighting off colds. In addition to this vitamin C delivers a variety of other health benefits too. As a powerful antioxidant, vitamin C protects LDL cholesterol in the blood stream from oxidative damage. Without this protective effect, damaged LDL cholesterol will attach itself to the artery wall and start developing into a hard plaque called atherosclerosis, a health condition that is a leading contributor to heart disease. Vitamin C is also 100% essential for the creation of collagen – the sticky protein that literally holds our cells together. Without collagen we would fall apart! Visit Vitamin C Benefits to learn more.

Below is a table that gives the nutritional value of vitamin C in fruits and vegetables that are generally availble and practical for juicing. There are other fruits such as the loganberry, Indian gooseberry and kakadu plum that contain incredibly high levels of vitamin C but are not easy to come by. Below the chart are some juicing recipes that are great sources of vitamin C.

Health Benefits of Juicing

HappyFruitFaceJuicing is an easy way to provide yourself with a high level of quality nutrition. Here I will talk about the properties of juicing that makes it so potent, and the health benefits that it can provide. It is a practice taken up by many people who are health conscious, who claim how great it is. So what is it about juicing we all rave about?

Well, there are 3 main reasons why juicing is so beneficial:

  1. The juice requires hardly any digestion, so all its nutritional goodness gets rapidly into your system.
  2. When you juice, you use more fruits and vegetables than you could actually eat. As a result, you are drinking a densely packed amount of vitamins, minerals and other plant-based nutrients.

  3. Liver detoxification

Below are some of the many health benefits of juicing :

  • Improving the cardiovascular system and heart health:

    • Both antioxidant vitamins C and E  prevent the damaging effect of free radicals on artery walls. They prevent blood from sticking, clotting, becoming toxic as well as helping to lower triglycerides levels (Here is more info about how to lower triglycerides). Good to great levels of vitamin C can be found in most vegetables and fruits. For the health benefits of juicing vitamin E you can use blackberries, kiwi, asparagus and spinach in your juicer recipes.
    • Potassium and magnesium are essential for proper heart function and a regular heart beat. Blackberries are a good source for both these minerals.
    • Additionally, as we know, being overweight plays a fundamental role in developing heart disease, so its good to take some common sense and a realistic approach on how to lose weight and maintain a healthy weight.

Detoxifying the liver – this is fundamental for good health:

      • The liver has 100’s of important functions. One of its main functions is to clean the blood and remove toxins and metabolic waste.  With the amount of toxins we are dealing with everyday in modern life we need to be real diligent in helping to keep it “clean” so it can keep us clean!
Certain nutrients are needed to provide the juicing benefits of liver cleansing. Antioxidants beta-carotene, vitamin C, vitamin E, and N-acetyl cysteine are potent liver cleansers. In addition, B-vitamins riboflavin and niacin also aid liver cleansing.  Cabbage, brussel sprouts and cauliflower have been found to be great for the liver.
      • You can also add milk thistle supplements to your diet to help the liver detoxify.
    • Alkalizing your system (vegetable juicer recipes only):

      • All vegetables are alkalizing. Fruits on the other hand are not; they are mostly acidic in nature.
      • The benefits of making your body PH level less acidic is a subject of its own, so here are just a few juicing benefits;

        • Improved brain function
        • Improved heart function
        • Slowing down the aging process
        • Improved joint function – helping with arthritis
        • Less disease-prone body environment. Acidic environments breed diseases.
        • Better digestion

    • Helping with healthy skin, hair, nails and eyes:

      • The antioxidants vitamins C and E help to prevent skin damage from sun exposure, due to their free radical neutralizing abilities. The health benefits of juicing blackberries and blueberries together will provide you with a good source of vitamins C and E.
      • A deficiency in riboflavin (vitamin B2) can cause cracked lips, hair loss, dermatitis, greasy looking skin and other skin problems. Putting kale, spinach, and asparagus in your juicer recipes will provide you with vitamin B2.
      • The most potent nutrient for healthy eyes is vitamin A, which is not found in plants. Its precursor, beta-carotene, is found in abundance in orange colored fruits and vegetables. Beta-carotene is turned into vitamin A by the body.  This vitamin is essential for the retina to function properly and prevent night blindness. Both vitamins A and C reduce the risk of age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and cataracts. Carrot juice is a very good source for both of these vitamins.
    • Increased energy levels:

      • This one is pretty simple. Lots of juicing means lots more vitamins and minerals which are responsible for all sorts of necessary chemical reactions promoting health and vitality and therefore lots more energy. Enjoy juicer recipes every day!!
    • Rebuild blood cells:

      • Yes that’s right!
This is made possible by the incredibly healthy chlorophyll, which would need an article of its own to give justice to its health benefits!
On a molecular level chlorophyll looks almost exactly like a component of the red blood cell hemin. More amazingly scientists have found that when you assimilate chlorophyll into the body, it makes the chemical shift and actually becomes hemin. Essentially, taking chlorophyll is almost like getting a blood transfusion!
Chlorophyll is also a pigment that gives plants their green color. So put the green stuff in your juicer recipes! The darker the green, the more chlorophyll it contains.

    • Improved immune system:

      • Drinking juicer recipes regularly is going to give you a wide variety and more than adequate amount of antioxidants which are essential for a healthy immune system. The antioxidants from fruits and vegetables include vitamins A, C, E, plus a wide range of plant chemicals called phytochemicals. Phytochemicals have amazing and varied health benefits, most notably anti-cancer properties.
