Tips for Juicing Oranges

Juicing Oranges Orange juice is the most common juice you will find in the store. If we even think about juicing the chances are oranges or orange juice will come to mind (or possibly Jack LaLanne). Oranges are the quintessential juicing fruit and juicing oranges at home beats commercial orange juices hands down in every department. Commercial juice is less nutritious (often considerably so) due to heating and processing. There are often added and not so good for you ingredients such as preservatives… and don’t even get me started on added sugar!

Here are some great tips and advice for getting the best out of your fresh homemade orange juice recipes.

Picking Oranges for Juicing
When picking out oranges for juicing at the store or the market there are a few things to consider.

1) Smaller oranges tend to be juicer.

2) Oranges with thin skins also tend to be juicer.

3) Oranges that feel heavy and firm for their size are juicer

3) Organic oranges are higher in antioxidants.

Tips for Juicing Oranges
Juice Oranges To pith or not to pith, that is the question? My answer is pith and pith some more. The pith is an outstanding source of antioxidants. There is as much vitamin C in the pith as the pulp of the orange. The vast majority of bioflavonoids in oranges are right there in the pith and other white membranes. Bioflavonoids are powerful antioxidants that can help protect us from cancer, heart disease and other degenerative disorders. So I always put as much of the pith through my juicer as I can. I even scrape it off the inside of the peel. Which brings me to another important point – don’t juice the actually skin, only the white pith between the skin and the orange.

The skin of oranges and grapefruits contain a substance that is indigestible and also harmful to us in large doses. However this only applies to grapefruits and oranges (including all their varieties like tangerines, tangelos and mandarins) but not to other citrus fruits like lemons and limes. The peels of lemons and limes are safe to consume.

Juicing the pith will produce a frothy juice that is a little less sweet, but it will produce an orange fruit juice that is decidedly higher in nutritional value. If it is not to your taste, not to worry, oranges juiced without the pith are still a great source of nutrition and extremely good for you.

Treating Anemia Naturally with Natural Juices

The possible causes of anemia include: heavy blood loss (e.g. menstruation), excessive destruction of red blood cells (e.g. medication) and poor diet that lacks vital blood-building nutrients.

Diet suggestions to help in treating anemia naturally:

Increase intake of foods that are rich in vitamin B12 and iron, like barley grass, rice bran, brewer’s yeast, bee pollen, soy foods, yogurt, alfalfa sprouts and algae (spirulina and chlorella). Eat a variety of whole, unprocessed, raw foods that are rich in vitamins, iron and folic acid. Increase intake of chlorophyll, the ‘blood’ of plants, to effectively build iron-rich blood. Examples of other foods: kidney beans, lima beans, molasses, sesame and flaxseeds.

Recommended juicer recipes to treat anemia

Juice any two or three of the following, drink frequently and rotating them. These combinations can also be used after a quick weight loss diet to get your strength back up.

Celery juice helps balance the blood’s pH, while spinach provides folic acid and iron that are important for people with this condition. Add an apple for its iron content and for its sweet taste. Alfalfa sprouts and wheatgrass are powerful blood healing tonic chlorophyll. Juice and add two teaspoons of spirulina or chlorella powder.

Raw spinach juice can be a bit strong and unpalatable. If you are a beginner, use less spinach and more of the others, slowly increasing as you go. Celery’s sodium gives natural juices a pleasant savory taste. The alfalfa sprouts and wheatgrass are also pleasant and easily mix with the other produce.

The high content of iron in beets regenerates and reactivates the red blood cells and supplies fresh oxygen to the body. Combined with carrot, this natural juice recipe will quickly nourish anemia sufferers in the hemoglobin department.

If you are not accustomed to beets, use less beets initially and more carrots. Gradually increase the proportion of beets till about four or five ounces each time.

Can You Juice a Banana and Make a Banana Juice Recipe ?

This is one of the most common juicing questions. The answer is yes, but it is not recommended. You can juice anything you want providing it doesn’t destroy your juicing machine but that doesn’t make it a good idea!

Bananas are a big hassle to juice. They have a very low water content compared to many other fruits. Therefore putting a banana through your juicer will produce very little juice and start clogging up your machine. I don’t know how many bananas you would need to juice to make a banana juice worth drinking, but I can tell you this. It would be A LOT and would require many cleanings of your machine just to produce it. That is not an experiment I am interested in undertaking. Just juicing one banana was a bad enough experience.

In light of this I have put together one equation. Bananas = Blenders.

can you juice a banana ?

What is it with you humans and all this juicing?
